Inclusive and ADA Accessible Playgrounds

Ground level play components are play activities that can be accessed from an accessible route and used directly from a mobility device such as a wheelchair. These elements allow children with mobility challenges to participate in play without needing to access elevated playground structures. Common ground level play components include musical instruments, talk tubes, and interactive game and activity panels.

Fully accessible playground systems, often referred to as fully ramped playgrounds, typically require more space than standard playgrounds. This is primarily due to ramp lengths and layout requirements needed to meet accessibility slope standards.

An accessible route is a continuous path that allows individuals with mobility challenges or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or strollers to move throughout the playground area. Accessible routes must maintain a slope no steeper than 5 percent and be at least 36 inches wide.

If the change in elevation exceeds a slope of 1 to 12, ADA ramp requirements apply. These requirements include specific standards for ramp length, landings, cross slopes, and handrails to ensure safe and accessible use.

Poured in place rubber surfacing is widely considered the best option for inclusive playgrounds. In addition to meeting ASTM F1951 standards, it allows for precise slope control and maintains a consistent surface over time. This creates a uniform, predictable surface that is ideal for wheelchairs and children with mobility challenges.

Swings are an excellent addition to inclusive playgrounds, particularly for children who benefit from sensory play, including many children with autism. ADA swings generally fall into two categories: accessible and fully accessible. An accessible ADA swing seat allows a child, often with assistance, to sit in a supportive seat with a full back and safety harness. A fully accessible ADA swing allows a wheelchair to roll directly onto a swing platform and be securely fastened, allowing the child to remain in the wheelchair during use.
