Because shade structures are open on all sides, the fabric is exposed to substantial wind loads. These forces create uplift on the framing and support columns, which must be counterbalanced by large, reinforced concrete foundations to ensure stability and safety.

Smaller shades may be installed using equipment such as augers and standard construction tools. Larger systems typically require excavators, forklifts, concrete pumps, and in many cases cranes to safely position and assemble structural components.

While there are structural limits to shade spans, we have installed systems large enough to cover basketball courts and entire stadium seating sections.

Shade systems are ideal anywhere people gather in areas with sun exposure. Common applications include playgrounds, bleachers and picnic areas, patios, pools and pool decks, sports courts, and parking lots.

Installation timelines depend on the size, quantity, and complexity of the shade systems, as well as site conditions and access. Smaller projects may take as little as two days, while larger or more complex installations can take two weeks or longer.

In most cases, no. Standard concrete slabs or patios are typically not engineered to withstand the wind loads and uplift forces generated by commercial shade structures, so properly designed foundations are usually required. While it is possible to design a reinforced concrete slab that functions as a monolithic foundation or large spread footing, this type of structural slab is rarely present as an existing condition and typically must be purpose built. For commercial shade systems, embedded anchor systems are always preferred over mechanical anchors to ensure maximum strength, stability, and long term performance.
