Ever been on a playground without shade on a hot day? Several pieces of equipment, if not all of the playground surfaces, can get so hot they are not safe to touch. Even on cool days, playground equipment retains massive amounts of heat when left exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time.

The Importance of Shade

Research published in Science Daily, revealed temperatures as high as 188 degrees Fahrenheit on tested playground equipment which included slides, handlebars and play set surfaces. The study didn’t end there. Researchers then tested equipment under shaded areas to get a gauge on the impact of playground shade structure installation.

A difference in temperature was recorded of nearly 50 degrees on public playground equipment that was left without shade versus equipment that was covered. This reduction in temperature brings surface levels down to a safe range for children to play on. The study concluded that a child’s burning potential is greatly reduced when playground equipment is shaded.

Getting Started with Shade Installation

There are several ways to create shade on a playground. First, check to see if there is any existing shade. Surrounding trees can be utilized to shade areas. If there are not trees on the playground or they only provide partial coverage, artificial shade structures can be used, like playground shade canopies.

Playground shade structures come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes that can be customized to best fit your needs. They are also made to withstand heavy wind loads, so even areas with high wind speeds are well equipped.

Commercial playground shade canopies require professional installation, knowledge of engineering principals and, in some cases, large machinery. In some states, the installation of large shade structures requires a building permit.

Our team of recreation experts is made up of Certified Playground Safety Inspectors and professional equipment installers. At Pro Playgrounds, when we complete a shade installation, we check to ensure all aspects are building code compliant and meet both CPSC and ASTM standards. We offer a huge selection of shade structures for all your recreational needs. Check our inventory today!

Playground shade canopies keep equipment cool for optimal use. They also make the playground a safer place for children to play. View the CPSC’s Public Playground Safety Handbook to learn more about the importance of shade and playground safety.
