Playground installations can be tricky. Site preparation, ADA requirements, weather conditions and playground safety are just a few of the many factors that must be taken into consideration throughout the course of the installation. Pro Playgrounds professionals are extensively trained on all of the above to help ensure you get the job done right.
Tip No. 1: Prepare the Site Prior to Playground Installation
- Before you begin, be sure to mark irrigation, plumbing, power, cable and any other underground lines.
- Prior to installing surfacing, clear the area of all asphalt, concrete, and other hard debris.
- Grade the site as close to level as possible for best installation results.
Tip No. 2: Make Sure the Playground Is Accessible
Did you know children with disabilities have been shown to experience higher levels of obesity and lower levels of social interaction than those without? This is likely due to the fact that not all facilities with such activities are readily accessible.
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), any newly constructed and altered State and local government facilities, places of public accommodation, and commercial facilities must be readily accessible to individuals with disabilities, including recreational facilities and play areas. The United States Access Board has provided a review of ADA guidelines as well as a step-by-step guide to assist in examining playground installations for compliance with minimum requirements. In addition to meeting the requirements, the Board recommends expanding accessibility efforts to provide all-inclusive play throughout play areas.
Tip No. 3: Get a Playground Safety Inspector Onsite
Certified Playground Safety Inspectors (CPSI) are extensively trained on hazard identification, equipment specifications, surfacing requirements and risk management methods. CPSIs can help ensure your playground installation is safe and verify whether equipment and installation meets CPSC and ASTM requirements. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and ASTM International playground safety regulations have been put into effect to ensure our parks, schools, churches and recreational areas provide safe places for children to play.
