Increased academic pressures have reduced or removed recess times from schools across the United States. In response, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement on the “crucial role of recess in school.”

The statement recommends children participate in 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. By providing children with access to kids playground equipment during recess, this recommendation is more easily achieved.

The opportunity to practice motor skill movements was also noted as a physical benefit of recess in the statement. For younger children, this is particularly important. Kids playground equipment provides early learners the ideal environment to better develop gross and fine motor skills.

Gross motor skills are put to practice as children run and play, moving from one piece of equipment to the next. Fine motor skills are developed through smaller movements, like playing with activity panels or grasping the sides of a ladder. In addition to accelerated motor skill development, activity panels make for an excellent learning enrichment tool. Gear activity panels stimulate cause and effect comprehensions in early learners, while music activity panels help introduce new lyrical concepts.

In addition to increased physical activity, students also demonstrate better academic engagement post recess. Following extensive analysis on the subject, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated, “a student’s ability to refocus cognitively was shown to be stimulated more by the break from the classroom than by the mode of activity that occurred during that break; any type of activity at recess benefited cognitive performance afterward,” including social engagement, which was noted as the main student activity during recess.

This indicates that student academic achievement is actually higher when accompanied by unstructured recess on the playground. The brief respite that recess provides gives students the opportunity to recharge between classes.
